Kahui appointed to guide science challenge
A group of top Maori scientists and innovators has been appointed to ensure the National Science Challenge for Technological Innovation includes a Maori world view.
The challenge aims to enhance the country’s capacity to use physical sciences and engineering for economic growth.
Computer scientist and Kahui Maori chair Te Taka Keegan says that’s why researchers need to incorporate the Vision Matauranga strategy, which aims to unlock the science and innovation potential of Maori knowledge, resources and people.
Other members are social science researcher Katharina Ruckstuhl, development scholar Manuka Henare, bioengineer Jason Turuwhenua who has developed a virtual eye, social entrepreneur Shay Wright and challenge director Margaret Hyland.
An example of incorporating Vision Matauranga is research on measuring groundwater flow velocity.
The aim is to develop new technologies and products to detect contaminants, which could help Maori to manage water quality.
The Kahui Maori plans to host a rangatahi hui for emerging Maori engineers and scientists.
