Resignation call over housing crisis
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says Finance Minister Bill English should resign over his failure to address the housing crisis.
Te Puea Marae is winding up its help for the homeless programme, saying it’s time for government agencies to step up, while the percentage of housing loans going to investors is increasing.
Mr Peters says Mr English claims to be on top of his portfolios after eight years in the job, but he has resisted any state building of houses or state loans to home buyers.
Meanwhile every year houses, schools, hospital beds and transport infrastructure need to be found for a new intake of migrants equivalent to the population of New Plymouth.
"Somebody’s got to be accountable for this appalling traffic mess that is going to affect so many families who in this generation will not be able to buy a home or will heave to wait 15 years to buy a home to start their family life in," he says.
Mr Peters says more houses were built in 1974 than are being built now.
