Last chance for Ma Te Reo funds
Whanau, iwi or Maori groups wanting money for community-based reo programmes have until Sunday to apply for the last round of Ma Te Reo funding to be done by the Maori Language Commission.
There’s $3.25 million up for grabs, and Te Taura Whiri says more than 1000 individuals and groups have registered to be eligible to apply.
Applications must be in by Sunday.
The money can be spent on Maori language courses, resources, language plans or local events with te reo Maori as the focus.
Last year Te Taura Whiri approved 91 projects totalling $2.6 million.
In future any funds for community-based activities will go through Te Matawai, the new body that is charged with generating a non-government strategy for Maori language revitalisation.
The make-up of Te Matawai is almost complete with only the Te Waipounamu representative and two ministerial appointments to be made.
On the weekend Taitokerau picked Waihoroi Shortland, and he will join Pania Papa, Bentham Ohia, Cathy Dewes, Jeremy Tatere McLeod and Ruakere Hond in the iwi seats.
Te Reo Tukutuku representatives are Mereana Selby for the education cluster, Scotty Morrison for media, Willie Jackson for urban Maori and Hiria Hape for the community sector.
