Brown Turei linked past and present in church
The late Anglican Archbishop of Aotearoa, Brown Turei, is being remembered as a humble man who embodied the gospel he preached.
Archbishop Turei died on Monday, and his tangi moves today from Whangara to Kauaetangohia Marae near Cape Runaway, with a stop at St Mary’s Church in Tikitiki.
Ngati Porou chair Selwyn Parata says Brown Turei was born in Opoptiki in 1924 to Hone Heke Waititi and Henriata Goldsmith, and placed as a whangai with his father’s sister, Hariata Waititi-Turei and her husband Teki Turei.
He says Teki was the son of the legendary Mohi Turei, the Anglican minister credited with setting the paradigm or Christianity from a Ngati Porou perspective.
Brown Turei served as an Anglican priest for 67 years starting at Whangara, where he met his wife Mihi.
He acted as a mentor to generations of young priests.
“He was a paradigm of eldership from a passing era,” Mr Parata says.
The funeral for Archbishop Brown Turei is at 11 am Saturday at Kauaetangohia Marae in Whangaparaoa-Cape Runaway, after which he will be buried in the family urupa.
