Hard won lessons lead to Principals’ Federation post
A principal who went through the fires of merging schools has been appointed president of the New Zealand Principals' Federation for 2017.
Whetu Cormick was principal of south Dunedin’s Macandrew Intermediate when it was merged with Forbury School in 2012 to become Bathgate Park School of Technology and the Arts.
His appointment as principal of Bathgate was opposed by some Forbury parents, and in 2015 he did a sabbatical research project which found similar tensions in other newly merged schools.
NZPF is the biggest organisation dedicated to advocating for and supporting school leaders in New Zealand and has 2150 members who are school principals in New Zealand primary, intermediate, middle, area schools and secondary schools.
They include state, private and integrated schools.
