Te Arawa hope for Moehau link acknowledgement
Te Arawa elders hope a hui in Whitianga this morning today will ensure Hauraki continue to acknowledge its connection with Moehau Maunga.
Te Arawa Lakes Trust chair Sir Toby Curtis says Te Arawa doesn‘t want to interfere with Hauraki’s historic treaty claim settlement, but it does need to stand up for the ancestors buried on the mountain near the top of the Coromandel Peninsula.
Te Arawa has a representative on the Trust which owns the wahi tapu where the captain of Te Arawa waka Tamatekapua, is buried, but the graves of other chiefs from the same period, including Tuhoromatakaka, Kahumatamomoe, and Kahukotirangi, are on Department of Conservation land.
“We want to maintain that history.” Sir Toby says.
