Multi-talented McDowell judged best actress
Diversity is the key for Ngati Hine's Miriama McDowell, who has just been named New Zealand's best actress for her performance in the film The Great Maiden's Blush.
She's had roles in films like Mahana and The Dark Horse, done stage and radio work, and has written a play about Maori in prison that premieres at the Auckland Festival on March 8.
She also directed a production of Shakespeare's Much Ado about Nothing for the Return season of the Pop Up Globe.
"As an artist I really want Maori people and Pasifika people to see to see our people perform the words of Shakespeare and realise we're really good at it and it speaks to us, so that is something I have tried to achieve with this show," McDowell says.
Taika Waititi’s Hunt For The Wilderpeople dominated the Rialto Channel NZ Film Awards, with seven awards, including best film, director and screenplay, Julian Dennison for best actor and Rima Te Wiata taking the Manukau Urban Maori Authority Best Supporting Actress gong.
