Korero rangatira to frame science research
Maori scientists and business leaders are looking for ways the government's science challenges can address issues of concern to Maori.
They're meeting in Auckland today for a high tech summit to discuss which projects should get priority and which could benefit from existing Maori expertise.
Traci Houpapa from the Federation of Maori Authorities says Maori are looking for innovations that can help them manage their land and water assets better, improve the productivity of their herds and flock, get more efficiency on their horticultural holdings, and plan better for the future.
They also want help assessing the effects of climate change.
She says today's hui is a way to put a Maori lens on the process.
"The korero, the whakaaro rangatira will directly contribute to the National Science Challenge thinking. Dr Te Taka Keegan and his team will be able to use that in framing science references, in framing the research ecosystem for nga tatou o te iwi Maori," Ms Houpapa says.
