Te Atiawa name changes gazetted
Original names have been restored to seven sites in New Plymouth as a result of Te Atiawa’s treaty settlement.
East End Beach can now be called Autere, and Blagdon Hill becomes Maungaroa.
The site of the former Barrett St Hospital goes back to being called Otumaikuku, and Barrett Lagoon is Rotokare.
Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa chief executive Hemi Sundgren says having the names changed recognises Te Atiawa's identity in the landscape, and works to balance out the political imposition of naming in colonial times.
According to the Gazette notice the English names can still be used.
