Rules bent on salmon space
Ngati Apa ki te Ra To is crying foul over aquaculture space in the Marlborough Sounds.
Chief executive Butch Bradley says when the iwi was negotiating its treaty settlement it sought suitable water space at the top of the South Island for farming, but was told there was no suitable area because of local government zoning.
He says the crown now proposes to override the zoning so the same area can be farmed by an overseas company, New Zealand King Salmon.
Mr Bradley asked why the Government seem to think it's right to give special treatment to foreign corporates, whilst denying basic good-faith negotiation and equal opportunity to its own treaty partner.
He says the treaty settlements process exists because previous governments disadvantaged Maori so that overseas-originating interests could make a quick buck at their expense.
