Options for iwi in Auranga development
South Auckland iwi Ngati Tamaoho this morning blessed the ground more than 1000 new homes are set to spring up in the fields of Drury and Karaka.
The 84 hectare Auranga development on Bremner Rd has been rezoned into Auckland’s extended metropolitan urban limit and granted special housing areas status.
Tamaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare says the dawn ceremony shows developer Charles Ma is prepared to work with constructively with Maori.
"I’m really proud of what Ngati Tamaoho and the whanau out here have done with the property developers and I understand they have a neat arrangement that will see mana whenua play a part in the development around employment but also reap some of the benefits of this property development boom that ishappening in Tamaki Makaurau and across the country," he says.
The dawn ceremony was also attended by new Auckland mayor Phil Goff, who then went on to Orakei Marae with his councillors for a powhiri from Ngati Whatua.
