Leadership needs to be shared
Labour MP Peeni Henare says the death this week of Taurangamoana leader Te Awanuiarangi Black at the age of 48 was heartbreaking.
He says it’s a reminder of how leadership needs to be shared.
Mr Black was involved in a huge range of activities, from language revival, kapa haka, and to treaty settlements and looking after his iwi’s interests in local government.
"So the challenge for all of us to all get involved. We are all leaders in one way or other. Too often we pin everything on one person and that burdewn can be heavy. So we will miss Awa. I'm heading down to pay my respects to a good man who worked hard not just for Taurangamoana but for all of Maoridom." Mr Henare says.
The funeral service for Te Awanuiarangi Black is at Te Whetu o Te Rangi Marae in Welcome Bay on Sunday morning.
