Girls’ school gets first Maori principal
The new principal of Auckland Girl’s Grammar says running Tangaroa College in Otara will be good preparation for the job.
Ngaire Ashmore from Ngati Maru is the first Maori principal at the high profile school, which has a high percentage of Maori and Pasifika girls on the roll.
Ms Ashmore says that’s where her experience in culturally responsive pedagogy and connecting with communities will help.
"I’m a great advocate that the success of young people is a partnership between community, whanau, students and the school. So I will be listening and talking to our whanau, to our community, to our girls, to our staff so we’re all heading in the same direction, making sure we are giving every opportunity to our young women to be successful," she says.
Ms Ashmore says she is looking forward to heading an all-girls school after a career in the coeducational sector.
