How many times must Maori be abused?
Martyn 'Bomber' Bradbury

One of the most outrageous parts of Anne Tolley's decision not to allow an independent inquiry into historic abuse by the state on NZers is the glaring fact that the majority of those raped, beaten, abused and killed by the State are Maori.

The majority of the 100 000 children stolen from their families and put into state care between the 1950s and 1980s were Maori and the pathetic offer of compensation without identifying the true extent of that abuse is not only unjust, it is shameful.

The decision to steal children and put them into state care where many were violently abused isn't mentioned much in our history. It's been a shameful past that our complicit Welfare Agencies have turned a blind eye to and it has disproportionately impacted those who had already suffered the harshest elements of colonialism.

Attempting to sweep decades of abuse under the carpet without fully acknowledging the social damage that abuse by the state has caused is not the way a progressive democracy acts, it's the way a racist system embarrassed by its actions behaves.
