Warriors power comes to north
A power cut that affected large parts of Northland hasn’t quelled enthusiasm for the Warriors, who are in Kaitaia for a spot of pre-season training.
Hone Harawira from Taitokerau Rugby League says he was up early to get the gas burners and barbeques going at Waimanoni Marae so the squad could have breakfast.
More than 1000 youngsters turned out in Kaitaia yesterday to see the players, and some of the region’s promising under-17 players got a special training session.
The players also heard from Maori leaders about problems in the community, including the impact of at least 11 known suicides in the last 15 months and five homicide investigations this year alone.
A big crowd is expected today to see the squad train at Arnold Ray Park.
Meanwhile, Transpower says power may not be reconnected until the evening.
It has called in the police after bullet casings were found around three damaged pylons in a remote area between Maungatapere and Kaikohe, raising the prospect that sabotage was behind the 3am outage.
