Te Pou Matakana to hold departments to account
The chair of North Island whanau ora fundng agency Te Pou Matakana is disappointed the Budget added just $2.5 million a year to the programme’s total funding.
Merepeka Raukawa Tait says whanau ora providers are more effective at delivering services to vulnerable families than mainstream agencies, but they get a fraction of the resources,
She says it’s time to hold those agencies to account, in the same way Maori and Pasifika providers are put through the ringer.
"If they’re talking to us about delivering better outcomes, we’re saying to them, where are your better outcomes? Where’s your framework so we can measure what you’re doing? Because we do need to measure them, and then we can start holding them to account, because they are not held to account at this point. We’re continuously told to perform, asked ‘how do you know if you are making a difference?’ Who on earth is saying that to government departments that receive these millions," Mrs Raukawa Tait says.
Te Pou Matakana has helped more than 6000 whanau and 45,000 individual whanau members through partnerships with more than 80 providers throughout the North Island.
