Traditional wisdom wrapped in digital games
A digital game based on Alaska Native stories and traditional Maori games will be featured at a Games in Learning conference hosted by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research in August.
Senor researcher Rachel Bolstad says hearing from some of the makers of the award winning game Never Alone will be a highlight.
Never Alone was crafted in partnership between game publisher E-Line Media and Alaska Native storytellers from the Inupiat community, drawing on traditional stories and culture.
A cultural ambassador for the game, Amy Fredeen, says the Cook Tribal Inlet Council saw video games as a way to bring traditional wisdom into the future and connect its youth to their potential.
Conference delegates will also take part in a workshop by Harko Brown on Maori traditional games and hear from Whetu Paitai about his work using Minecraft, one of the most popular kids games in the world, to connect students to te reo Maori.
