SOUL takes Ihumatao protest to Geneva
A Mangere woman fighting to save an ancient habitation site at Ihumatao from destruction is off to Geneva today to put her case the United Nations.
Pania Newton’s invitation to speak to the Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination came after her presentation to the UN’s Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York in April.
She’ll be joined by another member of from Save Our Unique Landscape, Delwyne Roberts.
They are retracing the footsteps of their ancestors, who took a case of land confiscation to the League of Nations in Geneva in 1924.
They say government support for Fletcher Building to develop confiscated Maori land using the Special Housing Areas Act is morally unacceptable.
New Zealand is this year under review, and the committee has invited a range of non-government organisations to comment on its performance in meeting the objectives of the convention.
