E-cigs shifting addiction
Mana leader Hone Harawira says making e-cigarettes legal can’t be treated as a substitute for the goal of a smoke free Aotearoa by 2025.
The former MP, who led a Maori affairs select committee inquiry into tobacco control, says most of the committee’s recommendations have still not been addressed by government.
He believes e-cigarettes are just the latest marketing opportunity for big tobacco companies..
"You know all you are doing is shifting your addiction from one of their products to another of their products. What are the chances that they are doing it for our best interests. They never have up until now and they won't be into the future therefore my thinking is get rid of the addiction once and for all, don't simply shift it," says Hone Harawira.
