Tiriti on the move
The 177 year old parchment is being taken tomorrow from its secure vault at the National Archives to a new exhibition space 200 metres away in the National Library, just across the road from Parliament.
Special containers have been made to transport the fragile document, along with the 1835 Declaration of Independence He Whakaputanga and the 1893 Women’s Suffrage Petition.
Tamaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare who has been part of the project working group, says it means more people will be able to see vital parts of New Zealand’s historical record.
"In order for those taonga to be living for us, people have to be able to engage with them, so no longer locked away in a vault and a place where all our tamariki and all kiwis can get along to see," he says.
The new He Tohu gallery will open to the public on May 20.
