Iwi could help prevent workplace deaths
Maori unionists have marked Workers Memorial Day with a call for iwi and unions to work together to help end workplace deaths.
Council of Trade Unions vice-president Maori Syd Keepa says every year more than 50 New Zealanders, many of them Maori, clock on for work and never come home.
In the past fortnight seven people were killed on the job.
Accident Compensation Corporation figures show Maori are more likely to be injured on the job than non-Maori.
Mr Keepa says Maori are more likely to work in high risk industries like forestry and farming.
He says unions and iwi could work together to find ways to make sure Maori aren’t getting injured or killed on the job.
