Time past for reo debate
Tamaki Makaurau Peeni Henare is challenging the new Education Minister Nikki Kaye to deliver on te reo Maori in schools.
Nikki Kaye who takes over from Hekia Parata at the end of the month, says she wants to modernise education.
She also wants the country to have the debate over compulsory te reo Maori in the curriculum.
Mr Henare says the time for debate is over, with polls showing the country is coming round to the idea.
"We need to see a plan. What does a plan look like that will introduce compulsory te reo Maori in schools? It's not like flicking a switch tomorrow and every school will teach it. You've got to have a staged plan over that time," he says.
