Cabins alternative to prison for tane in Kaitaia
A far north trust is building cabins for men in an attempt to keep them out of jail.
He Korowai Trust has developed a range of innovative housing solutions, and looks set to benefit from some of the Maori housing money in tomorrow’s Budget
Chief executive Ricky Houghton says a recent initiative was building cabins to take men involved in domestic violence cases.
He says it means women can stay in their family home and children’s lives aren’t turned upside down.
"There’s not very many sentencing opportunities for the judges. We hope to give the courts a credible community response and dad can still go to work and when it comes to get them around the table he hasn't lost his job, in terms of reconcilliation because the bottom line is, they are going to reconcilliate, they do get back together, they want to stay together but they also want a bit of support and a few ideas," says Ricky Houghton from He Korowai Trust.
