Rongoa way to heal communities
It's Conservation Week and that has many Maori looking at the ngahere and wanting to understand its secrets.
Helensville herbalist and rongoa Maori practitioner Donna Kerridge says people need to appreciate how environmental systems work together.
She's running a rongoa workshop in Auckland tomorrow evening.
Donna Kerridge it's a way to protect and sustaining the matauranga or knowledge.
"It's not just about learning this tree is good for this or that, or this plant is good for this or that. It's recognising a healthy ngahere or environment, whether that be at the sea or in the bush, recognising what it takes to create a healthy environment. When we learn that and we overlay a natural environment to our own human communities, we actually know how to heal and you don't need me quite so much," Ms Kerridge says.
Rongoa Maori: Getting to knows the natives workshop is as the Eco Matters Environment Trust in New Lynn from 6.30 Wednesday evening.
