Maori Tourism aims for Chinese visitors
New Zealand Maori Tourism is teaming up with the China Chamber of Commerce in New Zealand and China Travel Service NZ Ltd to promote the China New Zealand Year of Tourism 2019.
The plan will be unveiled today after a ceremony in Wellington to welcome a high profile Chinese delegation led by the vice chair of the China National Tourism Administration, Li Shihong.
The year will involve a series of bilateral, commercial, educational, trade, cultural and tourism events to showcase the special relationship between China and New Zealand.
Maori Tourism chief executive Pania Tyson-Nathan says almost one in five tourist activities are now specifically related to Maori experiences, so it is important to nurture the operators to ensure they can meet demand.
Visitor numbers from China were down 2 per cent in the year to June, so tourism organisations need to work together to create strategic targets that benefit the local economy.
