Little visit creates mandate expectations
Tuhoronuku chair Hone Sadler says the new Minister for treaty Negotiations should look at ways to strengthen his organisation’s mandate rather than relitigate it.
Andrew Little and Maori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta met separately on Friday with the Tuhoronuku executive and with a large group from the hapu collective Te Kotahitanga, before holding an open hui on Saturday at Waitangi.
There was support at the hui for a shift to the framework outlined in the Maranga Mai report, which would creae a new hapu-based structure to oversee negotiations.
But Mr Sadler says it’s important there still be seats at the table for kuia kaumatua and for representatives of Ngapuhi who don’t live in the rohe.
He says Mr Little needs to be careful of creating false expectations, or caving in to pressure to break up the settlement.
