History emerges from peninsula names
Maori, French and English names reveal the rich history of Banks Peninsula and Christchurch's Port Hills in a new book published by Canterbury University Press.
Author Gordon Ogilvie has drawn on a long out of print Place-Names of Banks Peninsula by Johannes Andersen, first published in 1927, as well as a wide range of other sources.
He says the area is particularly fascinating with whalers, flax traders, boat builders, French Catholic priests, Maori pa, shooting ranges, timber-milling, farming, brickworks, breweries, malt works, battle sites and vineyards all represented in the names put on the landscape.
