Alien thrash wins prize spot
Teenage thrash metal trio Alien Weaponry have made the finals for the APRA Maioha Award for contemporary Maori songwriting with Raupatu, which focuses on land confiscations by the colonial government.
They're up against another first time finalist, Kingi Kiriona, whose Atua Whiowhio performed by kapahaka group Te Iti Kahurangi blends haka and hip hop.
Also in the mix is Taku Mana by previous winner Maisey Rika, from her fourth album Tira.
The award will be presented at the 2017 APRA Silver Scroll Awards
In the SOUNZ award for contemporary composition, 2016 winner Salina Fisher was nominated for her string quartet Torino, which was inspired by the music of taonga puoro artist Rob Thorne.
