Aunties and nannies secret political weapon
Hauraki Waikato MP Nanaia Mahuta says voting is something that needs whanau support.
With less than three weeks to go before the September 23 election it’s too late to get on the printed roll, but new voters can enrol up to the day before and cast a special vote.
By the cut-off more than 400,000 eligible New Zealanders hadn’t enrolled to vote, more than half of them are under 30.
Ms Mahuta says she hopes the issues being raised in the campaign will get people to the voting booths.
"How you talk about politics at home does have a big influence on your decision your decision to get to the polling booth and the aunties and the nannies are still the biggest political motivators to make sure the mokopuna's get out and vote," she says.
Early voting starts next Monday.
