Labour’s deputy leader Kelvin Davis says the party wants all families to be successful, and increased support for Whanau Ora is one way to achieve that.

A Labour-led Government would double the extra spending in this year’s Budget to $20 million over four years, and create an independent Whanau Ora reviewer to ensure not just service providers by government agencies are delivering the most effective services.

Today’s announcement at Te Whanau o Waipareira in West Auckland should put to rest any fears what was the Maori Party’s flagship policy could be under threat from Labour.

Mr Davis says a review of the way Whanau Ora is delivered could lead to even more funding, and there will be pressure on Whanau Ora and community non-government organisations to work together in what he called a four-pronged approach.

"Doubling the additional funding, having the independent Whanau Ora reviewer who will report to parliament to ensure the transparency of what’s going on in the Whanau Ora space, reviewing the Whanau Ora service model and then making sure that Whanau Ora agencies and NGOs in every community are working together to provide better outcomes," he says.
