The latest Pikihuia Awards show writing can run in the family.

More than 130 entries were received for the biannual competition for Maori writing, and Huia Publishers' Robyn Bargh says several of the student finalists have a parent and/or grandparent who is a published writer.

The Best Short Story written in English went to A Portrait of Sandra Dee by Lauren Keenan from Wellington, who was also a runner up with another story, In the Shadow of Monte Cassino.

Zeb Nicklin from Palmerston North wrote the best short story in te reo Maori.

Tahu Potiki Te Maro-Doran from Otaki College wrote the best short story by a school student in te reo Maori, while Nikau Wi Neera for Kapiti College won the student English short story section.

New Plymouth's Steph Matuku was judged to have submitted the best novel extract.

Aroha Awarau's Clenched was the Best Film Script.

Pere Durie from Papamoa was runner up in both the short story in English and the film script categories.

Stories from selected finalists feature in the latest short story book HUIA Short Stories 12, which was launched at Saturday's awards ceremony.
