Major gallery show for clay artist Wi Taepa
Senior Maori clay artist Wi Taepa is to get a major retrospective at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki.
The show opening on April 28 looks back over 30 years of the artist’s work as he expressed a unique and contemporary artistic voice.
The exhibition traces Taepa’s progression from a background in carving and his grounding in matauranga Maori through to the international residencies that have influenced his practice as an artist and arts educator.
Curator Nigel Borrell says Taepa is a significant figure in New Zealand art, and his works have been collected the world over.
Gallery director Rhana Devenport says Taepa’s work articulates a Maori understanding of clay practice informed by the artist’s connection to both Maori genealogy and material innovation.’
The retrospective was developed in partnership with Porirua's Pataka Art + Museum.
