Whanau Ora still waiting for state putea
Former Whanau Ora Minister, Dame Tariana Turia says she is still waiting for more of the mainstream government agencies to throw their support behind the integrated service delivery model.
Whanau Ora providers have been in Blenheim for the annual symposium where they share success stories and challenges.
It’s hosted this year by Te Putahitanga o Te Waipounamu the South Island commissioning agency
Dame Tariana says all three commissioning agencies are doing a great job picking up after the poor performance of mainstream departments, which continue to act out of silo's.
"The most important job is to restore families' faith they can pick themselves up and do for, themselves. The state should get out of their lives and just hand over the putea actually. That was the goal, to not have so much state engagement because when the state engages with us it always focuses on everything that is negative whereas we need to focus on the strengths whanau have to pick themselves up," she says.
