Mara help Ranginui health message
Health and gardening tips are on the menu for a hui at Wairoa Marae in Tauranga this weekend.
Ngati Ranginui, the Bay of Plenty District Health Board and national Maori health promiotion agency Toi Tangata are promoting healthy kai on marae.
Runanga spokesperson Aroha Tito says speakers like Rereata Makiha on will talk about maramataka, the Maori lunar calendar, which is used as a guide for planting and harvesting.
She says there is increased interest in natural health and self sufficiency in Tauranga Moana, including gardening in homes and marae.
"Most of the marae in Tauranga have their own marae for tangi and hui. There are generally kaumatua who live around the marae and they go down and pick themselves a handful of parsley or a few stalks of silverbeet," Ms Tito says.
The hui will also launch Ngati Ranginui’s Mauri Ora Whanau Journey, a six month programme of wananga and fun physical activities for the whole whanau.
