Davis heeds Ombudsman’s insights
Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis wants prisoners to have confidence in the complaints system.
The Chief Ombudsman, Peter Boshier, has published an inspection report highlighting problems at Christchurch Men's prison, including high levels of violence, unacceptable conditions in some units and a lack of constructive activities.
The office also published follow-up reports saying the Corrections Department has failed to implement more than half its recommended changes in Arohata, Manawatu and Rolleston prisons.
Mr Davis says he was concerned what happens if prisoners think their complaints won't be heard.
"They've got a lot of time to think about the problems, think about the issues, and it just breeds tension in the prisons. I've said to the CE of Corrections I would like these things addressed and they've given me assurances they will address the problems the Ombudsman has raised," he says.
Mr Davis says he values the independent scrutiny the Ombudsman offers.
