Magna tiriti link explored
A new book will be launched tomorrow that explores the influence of the English Magna Carta on New Zealand’s legal, political and popular culture, including its impact on the Treaty of Waitangi.
Co-editor Chris Jones, a senior lecturer in medieval history at the University of Canterbury, says Magna Carta and New Zealand considers what the 800-year-old charter has meant to both Maori and the settler population and explores how it has shaped our modern democracy.
He says the research goes to the heart of current constitutional debates in New Zealand, as it’s about the core values that define us as a society and the ways in which we choose to govern ourselves.
Contributors include Associate Professor Te Maire Tau, the director of the university’s Ngai Tahu Research Centre.
