Mohaka camp teaches water skills
A hundred rangatahi will raft down the wild Mohaka River in the northern Hawkes bay this week as part of a programme to improve their water safety skills.
The rangatahi are attending the annual five-day summer camp put on by Te Taitimu Trust in partnership with Ngati Pahauwera Development Trust and Water Safety New Zealand.
Water Safety chief executive Jonty Mills says while Maori represent 15 percent of they population, they account for a quarter of preventable drownings,
The camp teaches water safety and survival skills including how to collect kaimoana safely.
Trust founder Zack Makoare says many whanau don’t have the chance to learn about rivers and the moana in the way their parents and grandparents did, so it’s vital they learn about safe practices around water.
