Teens skip insulin for body image
A new study has found many young people with type one diabetes are purposely not taking insulin so they can lose weight.
Pediatric endocrinologist Paul Hofman says the disorder he calls diabulimia affected about a third of the study group, with 75 percent of those affected being female.
He says what was surprising was there was a major enthicity factor, with Maori adolescents in the Auckland and Waikato study twice as likely to have an eating disorder and Pasifika five times more likely than Pakeha.
Long-term risks of skipping insulin include cardiovascular complications, possible blindness and kidney failure.
