Prisons put load on southside schools
The Criminal Justice Summit may be in Porirua today, but it's of critical importance to Manurewa.
The electorate has three Corrections facilities – the South Auckland men's and women's prisons and the Whakatakapokai youth justice facility on Weymouth Rd.
MP Louisa Wall says they have an impact on the community, with whānau moving into the area to be close to prisoners, and ther children attending local schools.
"We have to make sure we do everything possible to support our schools because we already know children who are born into families where one or both parents are in prison have additional needs, behavioural needs, learning needs so we have to make sure we are adequately supporting our schools so we are supporting our children and families," she says.
Ms Wall says the resource consents for the prisons included extra funding for schools in the area.
