Waikato highlights Maori technology push
It’s TechWeek, and Waikato is making a special effort to highlight the contributions Maori can make to New Zealand’s information technology sector.
From 4 this afternoon there’s a Maori Tech Showcase at the Wintec Atrium in Hamilton, featuring new and established Maori tech entrepreneurs.
Kahurangi Taylor from Waikato Innovation Park says Maori technologists in Waikato and Bay of Plenty are working in a wide range of areas, including virtual reality, augmented reality, gaming and other forms of application development.
"Waikato actually was the fastest growing tech region in the country which was quite surprising to a lot of people because you wouldn't think of Waikato as necessarily a high tech space but it is," she says.
Kahurangi Taylor from says one aim of the showcase is to encourage more rangatahi to consider careers in technology where there are high rewards in wages and job satisfaction.
