Korako keen on mega-prison
National's Maori development spokesperson says the Government is making a big mistake not going ahead with the $1 billion upgrade of Waikeria Prison.
Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis says a 3000 bed mega-prison is the wrong approach, and he's considering other options to house record high numbers of inmates and in long term bring the prison population down.
Nuk Korako says it's not time to get soft on crime.
"At the moment crime is down and prison numbers are up. Imprisoning people actually works," he says.
Mr Korako says the statistics show Maori are disproportionately the victims of violent crime.
