Former students and staff from Auckland-based Queen Victoria Māori Boarding School will be interviewed for a New Zealand Oral History Awards project.
Neill Atkinson, the chief historian for Manatū Taonga the Ministry for Culture and Heritage says as the country marks mark 125 years of women’s suffrage there are several projects focusing on the lives and experiences of women.
Te Aratika Whānau Trust will explore the whakapapa of northern iwi and hapu through the eyes of 86-year-old kuia Mereana Waikanae Hoani and Dawn Nina Epiha, who is 93.
Other project include stories from the Sisters Overseas Service, which helped women travel to Australia for legal abortions in the 1970s, 80 years of the Christchurch Operatic Society, the life and work of artist Tony Fomison, and the relationship of Samoan elders with land.
