Prison no answer to cutting muster
Prison reform advocates are rallying at parliament this afternoon to opposed the rebuild of Waikeria Prison.
The Government has opted for a new 600-bed unit, rather than the 3000-bed mega-prison planned by National.
People Against Prisons Aotearoa spokesperson Kate McIntyre says prisons don't rehabilitate people or keep communities safe.
She says the government must cease all prison construction and take serious measures to reduce the prison population and build better alternatives.
She says repealing the Bail Amendment Act could lead to more than a thousand people being released, as many of those locked up on remand won’t be sentenced to prison time.
