Indigenous youth hui to tackle big issues
Rangatahi will get a chance to discuss issues like youth suicide, diversity, environment, addiction and cyber-bulling at the country’s first indigenous youth conference, Te Ara Moana.
Up to 300 young indigenous leaders are expected at Ōrakei Marae at the end of July to hear guest speakers like Native American actress Q'orianka Kilcher and social prevention advocate Herewini Jones and to participate in workshops and discussions.
Veeshayne Patuwai says it’s an initiative of Urutapu Tamāhine, a young Māori women's leadership programme.
She says the tamāhine wanted a space for indigenous young adults to come together, restore traditional knowledge, and learn how to use it to navigate through an increasingly difficult 21st century.
