Martin questions Oranga Tamariki numbers
Children's Minister Tracey Martin says Ōranga Tamariki is putting too many children into care.
Speaking to parliament's social services committee yesterday, she said that was because there aren’t enough intensive intervention services,
Ms Martin said giving families and children better support through intervention can keep children in their homes.
She pointed to some models iwi are working on as the way ahead.
There are 6000 children in state care, 60 percent of whom are Maori, and another 100,000 children who may need some sort of help from Ōranga Tamariki.
Ms Martin said the agency had achieved a lot in its first year, and a $52 million boost in the budget will allow it to expand services.
