Ngāpuhi has started voting on changing the mandate for negotiating its treaty claims, with several hui held over the weekend.
Hone Sadler, the chair of Tūhoronuku, says it’s a frustrating process to go through because it pits Ngpuhi people against each other.
T`uhoronuku held the mandate to negotiate but was denied the opportunity to do so by the previous Government which kept putting up hurdles.
Mr Sadler says he is more optimistic about progress under the current Government, and in particular Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Andrew Little.
"From my perspective this is a better face of the crown. I think this is more caring. This crown I think is genuine in wanting to settlle because this is the only minister who has openly said the crown wronged Ngāpuhi. No other government minister has admitted to that," he says.
There are Ngāpuhi consultation and endorsement hui today at The Distinction Hamilton Hotel and Conference Centre from 11 am and Alexandra Park Raceway from 5.30 to 7.30 this evening.
