Record number of Maori doctors at Otago
The number of Māori graduating as health professionals at the University of Otago is at an historic high.
On Saturday 40 doctors, 13 physiotherapists and five pharmacists will be among the 76 Māori health graduands who will cross the Dunedin Town Hall stage to receive their tohu.
There will also be seven dentists, five oral health graduates and two doctors of Clinical Dentistry.
And while he can's be there, on the graduation list is Rob Mane from Ngāpuhi, who is training to become the first Māori maxillofacial surgeon.
Zoe Bristowe, the university's Māori health workforce development programme manager, says it the graduation will have a widespread positive impact on New Zealand’s health workforce and communities.
The students will also be celebrated at a pre-graduation event on Friday, Te Heika Pounamu, which is also an opportunity to honour the outstanding achievements of tauira Māori throughout the university.
