Rangatahi in youth justice residences are being encouraged to learn about te reo and tikanga through a Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori contest.
The final quiz for Te Māia o Parekarangi trophy will be held tomorrow by video link.
Oranga Tamariki’s newly-appointed Māori workstream lead, Michael Moses, says more then two thirds of rangatahi in the homes are Māori, and encouraging a positive cultural identity has positive outcomes.
The contest includes a section where the young people have to talk about kaupapa like manaakitanga and whānaungatanga.
"Listening to our children kōrero about the importance of whānaungatanga to them or their lack of experience of whānaungatanga is really powerful kōrero to capture and from the reo we've really springboarded into many other whakataetae like a national speech competition for children in residential care and other competitions and other whakaaro that try to grow and allow our young people's voices to be heard," Mr Moses says.
As well as kaupapa Māori programmes, the residences offer vocational, sports and arts programmes to expose the young people to other avenues in life.
