Tamanui finalist in river awards
East Cape conservationist Mere Tamanui has made the finals of the New Zealand River Stories category of the New Zealand River Awards.
Judges say Tamanui has merged the ancient Māori principles of environmental guardianship with modern scientific methods in the Gisborne district, reconnecting whānau to their ancestral awa.
The other finalists are the group that has been restoring and protecting Te Auaunga Oakley Creek in Auckland, and years Te Kākano Aotearoa Trust, a Wānaka community-based native plant nursery that has planted upwards of 35,000 trees in the Upper Clutha area.
The winner will be announced on November 13.
