Fire dancers to light up Te Matatini mauri move
The mauri of Te Matatini is on the move again.
The symbolic representation of the biannual kapa haka contest had been at Manurewa Marae for the past few weeks, and tomorrow it will be welcomed on to Mataatua Marae in Mangere.
Marae spokesperson Poroto Ngaropo says it’s part of a process of uniting herenga waka and mana whenua and getting everyone ready to cost the competition in early 2021.
"This competition has been going on a long time, a significant one that recognises top kapa haka performers so this mauri is rally important, together with this year in memory of Dr Bub Wehi and his hoa rangatira, Nen, so that's all part of this as well," he says.
The wero will also include a fire dance performance to acknowledge the Pacific connections to kapa haka.
The wero starts at 5.30pm Tuesday at Mataatua Marae in Killington Cres, Mangere,
